A recently released communique by Beijing Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau (BMEEB) indicated that in 2020, 82 species of natural and semi-natural ecosystems, including forests, scrublands, brushlands, meadows and grasslands, and wetlands, were recorded in Beijing based on field survey. A total of 5,086 species in Beijing were recorded, and 70 new species were found during this field survey, of which 12 were species newly registered in China. According to the communique, Beijing's complex topography possesses diverse habitat types and rich biodiversity, and plays a vital role in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei ecological landscape.
