“Every time I come back to Chaoyang, it feels like coming home.”
My name is Nathan Stoner, and I grew up in England. I joined Cummins in 2010. Cummings is a large international company that focuses on a few different segments primarily in creating energy, energy for transportation, energy for power generation and now we're exploring hydrogen energy as well. Our headquarters are in Indiana, in the US. Our Chinese headquarters are here in Chaoyang, Beijing.
Cummins has been working and doing business in China for almost 50 years. So we looked at different areas and that time we considered Beijing to be the best choice for a few reasons. One is that it's a capital city, so with that comes good infrastructure, many foreigners, international environment, and strong local talent. Also many industry organizations and associations set headquarters or big offices in Beijing, so it allows us to stay connected very easily to many people in our industry.
21 years ago, in 2002, I visited Chaoyang for the first time. And Beijing looks totally different now in a very positive way. So I'd say keywords that help me describe my experience in Chaoyang, namely very international and very lively. There are lots of activities you can never get bored, and lots of different places to go out. The nightlife and weekends in Chaoyang are also very colorful. On the other hand, Chaoyang has been a great help for us in businesses. As Chaoyang has continued to expand and our businesses also expanded. We have a very strong connection with the Chaoyang government, especially when we need help, because our company is one of the “service pack” enterprises of Chaoyang. So we have a direct contact that really helps us in many areas either with helping our talent, helping our business to understand and interpret different policies. So as the services provided by Chaoyang government continue to be improved, the connection between our company and the government has become closer.
So we work closely already with Foton in Beijing and we look forward to working with Chaoyang to see for new technologies like battery vehicles for hydrogen fuel cell hydrogen ICE engines and we are looking for opportunities to using them inside Chaoyang and inside Beijing. That also I think can drive innovation and demonstration of high tech and also cleaner emissions for the area.
From a personal side, I feel different things.I'd say Chaoyang it more feels like a large district. You have lots of different areas almost most of us don't need to leave Chaoyang to do anything. My wife grew up in a city, she liked buildings. I grew up in the countryside in England and I like green space. But now you can have both in Chaoyang. You can get lost in Chaoyang both in buildings but also in parks which is really nice. In recent years, the biggest exciting area for me is the cleanup of the canals not just the water, but the walkways next to the canals or cycle ways next to the canals. It is just another different way to explore Chaoyang. I didn't think about that before.
Beijing or Chaoyang is like an experience to you of traveling away. But for myself this is where I live. So when I come back to Chaoyang I feel that's my home. I don't feel I'm missing home elsewhere. Increasing my mandarin is necessary for me to enjoying the time here. I'm very hopeful that my daughter and my son will be fluent in mandarin, and maybe even have a Beijing erhua acent. So I'm really excited for them in the future!
