An Interesting Museum — China Railway Museum
China Railway Museum is the only state-level professional museum for railways in China. Established in 1978, it was formerly known as the Science and Technology Museum of the Ministry of Railways and was renamed as China Railway Museum in 2003. It is mainly responsible for collecting, protecting, displaying, exhibiting, and compiling cultural relics and scientific payoffs in railways.
China Railway Museum have three branch museums: Zhengyang Gate (Zhengyangmen) Museum, Eastern Suburbs Museum, and Zhan Tianyou Memorial Hall.
Eastern Suburbs Museum
Eastern Suburbs Museum is located on the north side of Jiuxianqiao Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing. Officially opened to the public on September 1, 2003, and with a total building area of 20,500 square meters, it is composed of a Locomotive Exhibition Hall and Comprehensive Exhibition Hall.
With a building area of 16,500 square meters, Eastern Suburbs Museum is mainly for locomotive exhibitions. It has set up eight exhibition lines with different trackbeds and sleepers that allow 80 to 90 locomotives to be exhibited at the same time. There are more than 50 restored locomotives in the exhibition hall, with a manufacturing age spanning from 1881 to 1993, including 28 steam locomotives, 8 diesel locomotives, 1 electric locomotive, 7 passenger locomotives, and 9 freight locomotives. Among them, there is the key highlight of the collections — the oldest extant locomotive of China — "No.0 Steam Locomotive" and several other meritorious locomotives named after well-known Chinese great men, such as the "Mao Zedong Locomotive" and "Zhu De Locomotive", as well as multiple models of locomotives of diverse ages from the UK, US, Japan, Russia, Belgium, and other overseas countries and regions.
The cultural relics exhibited in the Locomotive Exhibition Hall of China Railway Museum are the epitome of the evolution of China's railway motive power, which has witnessed the history of China's railways from backwardness to modernization.
